Project Description

Slate pencils were a writing tool used in the 19th century by schoolchildren to practice handwriting and arithmetic: Composition: Made from softer slate rock or soapstone, slate pencils were more available than chalk and reusable slates were cheaper than paper. Use: Slate pencils were used to write letters and numbers on slates, which were usually set in a wooden frame. The slate pencil made a grayish silver mark on the slate that could be easily erased with a cloth. Sound: Slate pencils made a sound similar to nails on a chalkboard.
